Imaginary Friends

Imaginary Friends

We all had imaginary friends as kids, whether action figures, dolls, or super-heroes. These were the toys that we built our games around & who helped us understand the world. We grew up a little and our imaginary friends moved into the Saturday morning cartoons or the cinema. Then we got a bit older still and they also became video game characters. They never left us. They just became trapped inside the computer. We think they should come back outside & play.

Dekko is trying to do something that’s never been done before. We are developing smartphone software that places digital content into the real world, but in a way that feels completely natural. This is really really hard to do but the experience that emerges is amazing & immersive. It re-connects us to our imaginary friends, and connects them to our online social networks. Augmented Reality (AR) is the term for this idea, and we’re taking a whole new approach to anything that’s been tried so far.

We have a very clear point of view, which is that the end-user experience leads and informs the technical solutions. Everything we’re creating at Dekko originated from insights learnt from observing behavior, and thinking “how can we make this more natural & part of everyday life?”. Our analog behaviors are natural but our online behaviors are digitally disintermediated by screens and UIs. Content that exists in the real world needs to look & feel natural, and behave as if it is part of the world. There’s nothing like this available today. Dekko is building the technology to help developers bring our imaginary friends to life.

I’m incredibly proud of the team that has come together around this vision. Dekko has some of the best augmented reality & computer vision technologists in the world, working hard to make their work invisible and our invisible friends real. Every member of the Dekko team has worked in the nascent Augmented Reality industry for years, and the Engineering team in particular is possibly the strongest team of AR engineers anywhere. As well as Dekko’s technical expertise,  the team has lived through AR’s exciting early hype cycle and have a very real understanding of how we want & don’t want to use AR.

I’m looking forward to sharing the results of the Dekko teams work with you soon.
